PEACH STATE BUILT FOR SPEED
JEFFERSON, GA - The consensus opinion among drivers entered in the American
Racing Association's (ARA) US Auto Sales Twin 125s Sunday at Peach State
Speedway is that the track is a "high-banked, two-grooved oval built for
speed".
That means you can expect the racing action to be fast and furious when
both the ARA Kool Seal Challenge Series and ARA Southern Thunder Late
Models run 125-lap races on the half-mile asphalt oval Sunday.
"Peach State is my home track," says Russell Fleeman of Dacula, GA, who'll
drive the #98 U.S. Auto Sales Chevrolet in the Southern Thunder race.
"Carrying your speed out of the corners is the most important thing to
running a good lap. If you feather the throttle in the corner, you won't
carry enough speed out of the corner. You better be ready to run fast if
you want to win at Peach State."
Fleeman has enjoyed great success at Peach State during weekly shows, but
is looking for his first ARA Southern Thunder win - anywhere. Fleeman
ranks sixth in the Southern Thunder standings with 133 points,
unfortunately well behind leader Paul Kelly of Snellville, GA (#24 Roy
Kelley Chevrolet).
Kelley will be among the favorites in the Southern Thunder race, and he
expects "plenty of two-groove racing. It's a real good track to race on."
Kelley leads Michael Lance of Dacula (#04 Lance Used Auto Parts Chevrolet)
by 14 points, with teenage sensation Stephen Leicht of Ashville, NC (#99
Action Racing Collectibles Ford) third with 194. Fourth is Dwayne Buggay
of Marietta, GA (#15 Atlanta Auto Brokers Ford) with 146 points.
"Peach State is a super fast high banked track," says Buggay, "and tire
pressure is key to your setup. You've got to do everything you can to
carry speed through the corners."
Leicht, who has more than 3,000 practice laps at Peach State, plans to run
in both races Sunday. He is sixth in the Kool Seal standings with 254
points, well off the pace set by Scott Kilby of Statesville, NC (#30 A&H
Windows Chevrolet) and Keith Bumgarner of Conover, NC (#95 Country Chair
Ford). Kilby leads Bumgarner by one point, 418-417, heading into the US
Auto Sales Twin 125s.
"Peach State is a pretty neat track," says the 14-year-old Leicht. "As
banked as it is, you get a lot of grip and that helps you go faster through
the corners. You're wide open coming out of the corners."
Gates open at 10 a.m. Sunday, with Kool Seal Challenge practice starting at
Noon. Time trials start at 4 p.m., and the Kool Seal Challenge race is set
for a 6 p.m. start. Local division races are set for 7 p.m. and the
Southern Thunder feature is at 8:30 p.m.
Fans arriving between 4 and 5:30pm will be eligible for $15 grandstand
admission. Adult ticket prices after 5:30pm will be $20. For more
