CON-WAY Opens Customer Invoice Status On Web Site; Special Security Function Set Up Gives Customer Control of Access

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--Aug. 7, 2001--Con-Way Transportation Services, Inc. (CON-WAY) announced today that its customers registered on its Internet web site can now gain access to up-to-date reports on the status of all of their invoices for less-than-truckload (LTL) service. This includes operations and billing information for Con-Way Canada Express, Con-Way Central Express, Con-Way Southern Express and Con-Way Western Express. Summary reports as well as details on each invoice can now be accessed.
CON-WAY customers asked to participate in developing the system have found it an excellent tool for managing their financial transactions with CON-WAY. If they had questions regarding an invoice sent to them by CON-WAY, they have been able to quickly research and resolve these questions using the new system. There are drill-down capabilities that allow users to get rate and delivery details on shipments as well as copies of the shipping documents and the delivery receipt. "If we believe an invoicing error has been made, all the information is right there to determine if we should pay the invoice or get with CON-WAY to get a correction made," said the payables manager of one CON-WAY customer.
Normal registration and validation of the user is required for all customer transaction data on the CON-WAY web site. An additional security function has been built to work in conjunction with this new web feature giving access to sensitive financial information. This function requires the customer to first designate a "primary user" within their organization who will manage the access of anyone else who will be allowed access to the account invoice status information.
"We've had the technical capability to deliver this for well over a year," said Jacquelyn Barretta, vice president, information services for CON-WAY. "When we held our first customer focus groups on this subject about 18 months ago, however, it was clear that our customers did not want all their employees to have access to this sensitive financial information. They wanted it restricted to `those who needed to know.' Our challenge was to build a system that would provide the customer with the control to manage access."
The CON-WAY information services department has worked with a group of "beta" customers to develop a system that resides on the CON-WAY computers, but provides their customers the ability to add and delete the names of employees in their respective companies who have access to the account payment information. The customers within the "beta" group have found the security system easy to use. It's given them the confidence of the control they want.
