BorgWarner Develops High-Tech Oil Pump for Fuel-Efficient Engines
CHICAGO, Aug. 7 An innovative two-stage oil pump will make BorgWarner a product leader in the European binary engine lubrication pump market and help BMW respond to the demand for greater engine efficiencies and fuel economy. Production of the pump for the BMW 3 series 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines is underway at BorgWarner Air/Fluid Systems in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Volumes will continue to ramp up to full production over the next three years. BMW's choice of BorgWarner's two-stage oil pump was driven by the need for technology to match BMW's oil pressure-actuated variable valve timing system. Variable valve timing enables engines to run more efficiently at both idle and driving speeds, leading to greater fuel economy and reduced emissions. "The program will significantly increase application of BorgWarner engine lubrication pump technology," said Gary Fukayama, BorgWarner Air/Fluid Systems Group President. "This growth supports BorgWarner's strategy to become a market leader in automotive hydraulic power sources, and tracks with opportunities we see arising from the phase-in of new emission regulations in Europe and North America as well as trends toward greater engine efficiencies and fuel economy mandates."
