SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 6 Federal-Mogul Corporation has been honored by a national drug enforcement organization for its commitment to providing employees with a drug-free work environment. The 2001 "Corporate America Award" was presented to Federal-Mogul Aug. 2 by the National Drug Enforcement Officers Association (NDEOA) at its national training conference in Orlando, Florida. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000525/DETH025LOGO ) Federal-Mogul was selected for the award because of its efforts to enforce a strict "zero tolerance" approach to drug use in the workplace and its support of law enforcement agencies working to prevent drug use and drug dealing. Previous winners of the award were Xerox Corp. (2000) and General Motors Corp. (1999). "I truly believe that Federal-Mogul has one of the most aggressive and effective drug programs in all of corporate America," said Charles R. Carroll, vice chairman of the NDEOA's Corporate Advisory Committee. "Their program is proactive and preventive in nature, yet with a strong determination to eliminate the drug dealer among their workforce. Federal-Mogul's drug and alcohol policy is not only well-written and developed, but should be used as a model for other corporations to follow." Richard Randazzo, senior vice president, human resources for Federal- Mogul, said the company is proud to be singled out among America's corporations for its efforts in drug enforcement and prevention. "Federal-Mogul places the highest priority on maintaining a safe workplace and protecting the health of our 49,000 employees around the world; our ongoing effort to provide employees with a drug-free work environment is a major part of that commitment," Randazzo said. Federal-Mogul uses a three-tiered approach to combating drugs in the workplace, according to Mark Westbrook, director, global security. "Our program is built around a strong corporate policy statement, backed by a comprehensive drug testing program and a thorough investigation and enforcement process," Westbrook said. Federal-Mogul's drug policy statement clearly identifies that "remaining drug-free" is a condition of continued employment. It also requires any employee to submit to a drug test as requested by management and to report any drug-related conviction to management. Any violation of these policies or refusal to submit to drug tests -- as well as any test result that shows illegal drug use -- is grounds for immediate termination. Federal-Mogul has required drug testing of its employees since 1985. "In 1997, the testing standard for 'pre-employment' was changed from urine to hair follicle testing, which has proved to be a more effective testing device," Westbrook said. Testing results for all Federal-Mogul facilities are tracked monthly by security personnel and communicated quarterly to senior management. The company's investigative and enforcement actions support its commitment to eliminating drug distributors and users from its employment. "We work closely with the anti-drug units of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies," Westbrook said. "The sharing of resources has assisted both the company and law enforcement in combating drugs." In addition to accepting the Corporate America Award, Westbrook was honored individually by the NDEOA for "outstanding support, dedication and commitment" to drug law enforcement and the association.
