RACING NOTES FROM THE FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES-ATLANTA DRAGWAY
FORMER FALCON FLIES ON TRACK THROUGH SUPER COMP
COMMERCE, Ga. - Former NFL Coach / current football TV analyst
Jerry Glanville made his Super Comp debut at this weekend's Federal-Mogul
Series at Atlanta Dragway in his '49 Ford.
"We've made three practice runs, but it's the first time we're
competing in Super Comp," said Glanville.
Glanville's background in racing is as extensive as his football career, as
he began racing at the age of fifteen using his brother's license.
"I even won the whole thing one event with my brother's license," said the
former coach.
This season, he has competed in about twenty races in various racing
categories; earning three top five finishes.
Multiple-national champion Gary Stinnett, of Emporia, Kan.,
eliminated him in the first round of eliminations today.
With the football season just weeks away, Glanville will be focusing full
time on football, and will not be racing again until next year.
CANSLER CRASHER
COMMERCE, Ga. - Competition Eliminator racer William Cansler is OK after he
crashed his B/EA Monte Carlo in Round 1 of eliminations.
Cansler was facing David Rampy, when he started losing control of his car
just past the starting line. By about half-track, Cansler's vehicle was
sideways and in Rampy's lane (the left). He managed to keep the car
upright and steer his car back into his lane, where Cansler then bounced
his front end off the wall, causing his car to spin. The vehicle came to a
halt after the rear end collided with the safety wall.
Rampy avoided colliding with Cansler by slowing down after seeing him in
his lane, then quickly accelerating to avoid any possible collision.
JET LIMO PROPELS THROUGH DRAGWAY
COMMERCE, Ga. - Jimmy "Jet" Neilson performed two exhibition passes
in his Mercedes Benz 500 SEC Jet limousine Saturday night between
Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car eliminations. The
18,000 horsepower limousine is powered by a Navy Banshee Fighter J34
engine, and is the only jet limousine in the country.
"Jet dragsters are a dime a dozen," said General Manager of Jet Limo Racing
Mike Albritton. "Why not stick a limo body on it and be one of a kind."
In its twelve-year history, the limousine annually appears at over
40 racing events, and over forty promotional appearances. When asked why
the team makes so many appearances, Albritton said that the team hopes to
promote the racing team, drag racing and its events.
"The stronger we make drag racing, the better we can be," said Albritton.
The vehicle also hold's the world's speed record on an urban
terrestrial highway by achieving a speed of 391 mph.
Currently, the team is expanding the racing team by building a jet
powered Lamborghini. Once the car is finished, the team plans on doubling
their appearances during the year.
AVERSTEDT BACK ON TRACK
COMMERCE, Ga. - Originally from Stockholm, Sweden, Viveca Averstedt made
licensing runs on Thursday and Friday to obtain her Federal-Mogul dragster
license in her A-Fuel dragster. Averstedt's best run came on Friday in her
final pass, with a 5.687 second, 223.91 mph. run.
"It's more of a renewal of my license, I had my Top Fuel license
when we came to the states in 1998," commented Averstedt. "We ran the
Gatornationals where I ran my personal best of 4.880 seconds."
Averstedt is a multiple event champion in Europe, where she
competed for twelve years. She was also a three-time Swedish National
Bodybuilding Champion and National Figure Skating Champion.
Serving as team owner and crew chief is Viveca's husband Hakan, who
has 22 years of experience as a racer and engine builder. The team hopes to
compete in several events during the remainder of the 2001 season.
