GIBBONS WINS ON THE STREETS OF TROIS-RIVIÈRES
Castrol Super Series // Round #8 // August 4, 2001 // Trois-Rivières, QC //
'Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières'
TROIS-RIVIÈRES, QC - The Castrol Super Series made its inaugural appearance
on the streets of Trois-Rivières, Quebec on Saturday afternoon. For all but
one tour of the 42-lap Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, the race belonged to
Don Thomson. But as the cliché goes, it's the last lap that counts. And for
the second week in a row, it was Peter Gibbons who had the honour of
leading the final lap.
Transmission troubles slowed Thomson's Home Hardware Chevy on its final
trip around the cement-walled street circuit, leaving the way clear for
Gibbons' Canadian Tire Chevrolet to take the victory. In the process,
Gibbons became the Castrol Super Series' first two-time winner of the season.
In many ways, the race bore a striking resemblance to the one held just
seven days earlier at Montreal's Autodrome St-Eustache. As was the case in
Montreal, the final 'lap leaders' listing at Trois-Rivières contained only
two names - those of Thomson and Gibbons. With four races remaining, the
top two competitors for the 2000 Castrol Cup appear to have emerged, once
again, as the prime candidates for victory in this year's late-season Super
Series events.
Another characteristic shared by both of this year's Quebec Super Series
events was the presence of Castrol SYNTEC Intrepid driver DJ Kennington on
the second step on the podium, following the race. The St. Thomas, ON
resident has been incredibly consistent in almost every race held this
summer and added another top result to his résumé, at Trois-Rivières.
Ford Taurus driver Kerry Micks finished third in the race after fighting
his way through the entire field. The Mt. Albert, ON driver stopped on the
track prior to the initial green flag and was relegated to the rear of the
23-car CASCAR Late Model pack for the start of the race. Advancing 20
positions was a huge accomplishment for the former Castrol Super Series
champion.
Reversing their final finishing positions from St-Eustache were Dave
Jacombs and Kelly Williams. At Trois-Rivières, Jacombs came home in fourth,
while Williams was fifth. Rookie Teri MacDonald-Cadieux finished sixth to
record her best ever Castrol Super Series result.
