JAY & JAY KEEP THE SPOTLIGHT GOING INTO ELIMINATIONS TONIGHT

        COMMERCE, Ga. - After the second and final day of qualifying
rounds, Jay Meyer and Jay Payne retain the top qualifier honors at Atlanta
Dragway in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car.
Meyer, of Freeport, Texas, made the quarter-mile run in 5.552 seconds at
252.85 mph to put him in the pole position.  
Claremont, Calif., resident Payne made a 5.745 second, 240.68 mph pass to
hold off rival and Oak Ridge, Tenn., native Von Smith for the honor of top
qualifier in funny car.  Payne will be going for his second straight win in
the Southeast Division and is leading the point's race for the division and
national title.
"It's going to be tough," said Payne.  "Smith is racing well over there. 
They've got a good team."  
Top qualifiers in other classes are Larry Pritcett of Clarkrange, Tenn., in
Comp, Bobby Dennis of Shorter, Ala., in Super Stock, and Tom Hemmingson of
Concord, N.C., in Stock. 
Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car eliminations begin later
this evening, with eliminations in the remaining categories scheduled for
