NUMMI and UAW Local 2244 Reach Tentative Agreement for New Contract

    FREMONT, Calif.--Aug. 4, 2001--New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) and the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2244 have reached a tentative agreement for a new contract, Kanji Ishii, President and CEO of NUMMI, announced today.
    "We are very pleased to have reached an agreement," said Mr. Ishii. "This is another milestone in our company's 17 years of successful partnership with the UAW. Through this agreement, we are strengthening our relationship and reaffirming our commitment to build high-quality vehicles for our customers through the use of our production system. This partnership, based on a shared vision and common purpose, is the key to our successful future," added Mr. Ishii.
    Terms of the tentative agreement will be withheld pending a ratification vote by the members of UAW Local 2244.
    The UAW has tentatively scheduled the ratification vote for Sunday, August 5th at 12:00 noon. The current contract expired at 2:00 a.m., Saturday, August 4. The new contract, once ratified by members of the UAW Local 2244, will be effective retroactively starting August 4, 2001 and will expire on August 6th, 2005.
    New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc., a joint venture of Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Corp., was established in 1984. The company employs 4,600 team members, including 3,800 UAW members, and produces a total of 350,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, Toyota Corolla sedans, and Chevrolet Prizm sedans annually.
