Exide Technologies' Tennessee Facility To Produce Batteries for Chrysler Group Vehicles

PRINCETON, N.J., Aug. 2 Exide Technologies , the
global leader in stored electrical-energy solutions, announced today that its
facility in Bristol, Tennessee has been approved by DaimlerChrysler
Corporation to produce original-equipment batteries for use in new 2002 model
year Chrysler and Dodge vehicles.
"Exide Technologies has more than an 80-year relationship with
DaimlerChrysler," said Craig H. Muhlhauser, President and Chief Operating
Officer of Exide Technologies. "We believe the Bristol plant's combination of
state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and a highly dedicated workforce were
key factors in DaimlerChrysler's approval." Exide Technologies' Bristol
facility will expand production by an additional two million batteries per
year.
The batteries manufactured in Bristol will be supplied to Chrysler Group
assembly plants located in Warren, Michigan; St. Louis, Missouri; Belvedere,
Illinois; Newark, Delaware; and Windsor, Ontario. The batteries will be
installed in Dodge Ram and Dakota pickups, Caravan minivans, Durango SUVs, Ram
vans, Neon subcompacts and Chrysler Town & Country minivans.
"In the evolving landscape of transportation battery technology, Exide
Technologies will continue to research and develop the types of products
leading automotive manufacturers such as DaimlerChrysler require for their
cutting-edge vehicles," said Thomas O. Minner, President of Exide
Technologies' Transportation Business Group. "The supply agreement is a
result of our continuing drive to achieve consistent, world-class excellence
in product and process quality."
Exide Technologies also recently announced that the Bristol operation was
the first facility of its kind in North America -- and the first Exide
Technologies facility -- to have earned the ISO/TS 16949 quality
certification.
