Mazda July Sales: Down 1.6%
IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 1 Mazda today reported a slight
decline in sales for the first time in nearly a year. July's 1.6 percent
decrease, the company's first after posting a monthly sales increase for 10
consecutive months, comes despite an impressive showing by the company's
Millenia luxury sedan, which reported a more than 20 percent increase in sales
from a year ago. Additionally, the sporty Protege compact sedan remained
strong in its performance from a year ago with a 13.3 percent jump in sales.
Overall, Mazda's sales for July are 24,071 and the year-to-date sales
total is 164,959 units.
"We feel very strongly about Mazda's recent sales performance as a whole,
and a monthly increase in overall sales for 10 consecutive months clearly
shows the company's forward direction," said Charlie Hughes, president and CEO
of Mazda North American Operations. "July is notoriously a slower month in
this industry, and we are realistic about the fact that not all peaks can be
without a small valley."
July indeed proved to be yet another good month for Mazda's stylish
Millenia. Last month Millenia saw a nearly 180 percent increase in sales from
a year ago; Millenia's best June ever. This month the luxury sedan climbed up
20.6 percent from its pace in 2000.
Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and
marketing, customer parts and services support of Mazda vehicles in the United
States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships
nationwide.
