FAIRFIELD, N.J.— The U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision returns to action August 11, 2001 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, as part of the Miller Lite 200 weekend, featuring the CART FedEx Championship.
The American Continental Championship enters the final three races of the 2001 campaign, with two drivers fighting for the title. The ACC features older cars, and is a championship within a championship. Drivers compete for a separate point schedule and race purse.
Leading the championship is veteran driver, Scott Rubenzer, of Brookfield, Wis. Driving the No. 11 Storage Battery Systems/Trojan Battery Co. Carbir Ford, Rubenzer has won four races and finished on the podium in all seven rounds of the championship. Three consecutive wins over the past three races, have propelled Rubenzer to the championship lead.
Right behind Rubenzer in the championship is Billy Hagar, of Tuttle, Okla. Hagar, in his first professional season, led the championship in the early stages. Driving the No. 4 Hagar Restaurant Service Van Diemen Ford, he has won three times and finished on the podium in all seven rounds.
While the duo of Rubenzer and Hagar have dominated, an unknown factor in the championship could be the appearance of one-off drives. In years past, various SCCA National drivers have attended events in the ACC class and captured a surprise win. This combined with the great battle between Rubenzer and Hagar is sure to make the 2001 ACC fight one of the best in recent years.
The 2001 U.S. F2000 National Championship continues with Round Eleven, August 11, 2001, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on the 2.258-mile road course.
