Traffic Pulse Networks and DTN Weather Services Partner to Develop High-End TV Traffic Graphics; Pact Also Provides Barter Opportunities for Weather Services
WAYNE, Pa.--July 31, 2001--Traffic Pulse Networks (TPN), a unit of Mobility Technologies, and DTN Weather Services (DTN), have entered into the Traffic Pulse Partnership Program to develop high-end 2-D and 3-D television graphics and maps to display unique Traffic Pulse traffic information on TV stations nationally.WNJU-47 New York will be the first station to showcase the graphic-rich traffic product.
The partnership will also enable DTN to provide TV and radio stations with weather programming and services in exchange for airtime (10 second spot inventory) that TPN's national barter sales force will sell. This represents a benefit for TV and radio stations, which have traditionally paid for these services in cash.
Ten second spot inventory is an advertising niche that stations often find difficult to monetize on their own.
DTN is a leader in providing television stations with compelling weather information and graphics devices that display weather conditions in 2-D and 3-D formats designed to appeal to viewers. The Triton(R)RT (3-D) and Storm Commander(R) (2-D) DTN graphics units enable TV stations to present detailed weather imagery and graphics to their audiences.
DTN is now working with TPN to enable these graphics units to display Traffic Pulse(SM) information in the same viewer friendly format, which DTN utilizes with its weather services. Both companies anticipate the partnership will lead to a dramatic improvement in the quality of traffic presentation on TV.
Reed Moormeier, President of DTN Weather Services, said, "The agreement with Traffic Pulse Networks will allow traffic conditions to be presented with the same level of viewer appeal as DTN has provided in the weather field for years to television stations across the country. DTN believes the partnership will significantly enhance traffic product offerings for television."
Gerald Griffin, TPN's Vice President of Television, said the agreement will raise the quality and appeal of traffic information, which benefits both parties: "Traffic information needs to be presented in a format that is easily understood and that helps people make informed decisions that improve their commutes. When discussing how we could revolutionize the on-air presentation of traffic information, we immediately saw the value in leveraging what DTN has already achieved within the weather industry."
TPN will assist DTN to maximize the value of advertising inventory it receives from radio and TV stations in exchange for its weather programming. TPN will also employ its national 10-second spot sales force to offer radio and TV stations unique opportunities to exchange unsold inventory for premium weather service and programming from DTN.
Al McGowan, TPN's Senior Vice President of Media, said the partnership aids both companies: "Traffic Pulse Networks will be able capture the value of 10-second spots for DTN while it also increases the inventory available to our growing sales force."
