July 28, 2001Victor Hugo Queiroz rained on Ross Fonferko's parade Sunday at Sears Point International Raceway. It wasn't a heavy rain, though, since Fonferko locked up the Russell Triple Crown Pro Series Championship presented by Yokohama with a second-place finish behind Queiroz in the 11-lap series finale at the 2.52-mile road course.
Fonferko, last year's series "Rookie of the Year," chased Queiroz, of Millbrae, Calif., for the entire 11-lap distance but was unable to become an "undefeated" champion, having won rounds one and two. David Mayhew, John Mefford and Bret Arsenault rounded out the "top-five" at the checkered flag.
Queiroz took the series runner-up honors with his victory, seven points behind the champion in the final tally. Queiroz had won the pole starting position on Friday
As part of Fonferko's championship awards he receives $10,000 in cash and a two-race ride with Primus Racing in the USF2000 event at Daytona, Fla. September 15-16.
F.Graem Hall and Clifton Sheldon, as mechanics of the winning car, received the Pro Mechanix Award.
