Family Roadtrips: Don't Forget to Pack the Technology

Hitting the highway for a family vacation this summer? Well, unless you
want to spend 8-10 hours a day battling irritable children to a chorus of
“are we there yet,” you better come up with some pretty good diversions.
Something better than crayons, pipe cleaners and craft paper, too.

Gone are the days when you can satisfy kids with “I Spy With My Little Eye”
and other not-so-novel travel games. Our children live in the technology
age and want access to the same kind of entertainment on the road as found
at home. Luckily, that's possible.

The obvious first choice ¾ your youngster's Gameboy. If you've ever tried
tearing your kid away from a session of Donkey Kong for dinner or chores,
you'll appreciate the hypnotizing effects of this handheld electronic toy.
Multiple children can battle each other through the use of extra units and
a connector. Hundreds of games are available. Prices have dropped.
Headphones keep the sound effects limited to players' ears. A backseat
activity hard to beat.

Have you considered audio books? A tape or disc player (which can also be
used to play favorite music tapes and CDs) with dual headphones can keep
kids interested, quiet and out of your hair (and earlobes) for hours.
Available for purchase or loan from the local library, books-on-tape are
both entertaining and educational.

But what about younger kids who can't aren't up to handheld games or
audio-only distraction. What about those who tire quickly of the story you
picked, the game cartridges you brought or the inferred maturity-level of
these diversions (can anyone say teenager?). Though you may thrill to the
sound of James Earl Jones' voice as making his way through Mark Twain's
greatest hits, your MTV-fed teens may liken it to something from the stone
age. Fortunately, good ole state-of-the-art technology has solved this
dilemma. It's called mobile entertainment.

“It's truly the only way to travel if you have children,” says Danny
Michalove, Vice President of Marketing for Rosen Products, a premiere
provider of both factory-installed and aftermarket accessory mobile
entertainment systems.

“Mobile media – whether it's movies, games or broadcast television
programming – is like having a traveling babysitter. The systems entertain
the kids while you sit back and enjoy the drive.”

Come to think of it, what could possibly be better than a rear-seat theatre
showing your children's favorite movies? Not much. Mobile entertainment
systems, standard on some vehicles, and an option on many SUVs and
minivans, are like a family room on wheels. Systems include video screens,
wireless headphones, VCR or DVD compatibility and the ability to interface
with video game systems like SEGA and Nintendo. Mobile entertainment system
prices have dropped in the past five years while their dependability and
quality has increased dramatically, due in large part to their exploding
popularity.

As sales of SUVs grows, so does the demand for mobile entertainment. So
much so, that it is estimated that by the year 2004, 30 percent of the
vehicles on the road will feature some sort of mobile entertainment system.
“We're not just talking about a single screen and VCR set-up anymore,” says
Michalove. “Features like wide-aspect ratio screens to accommodate the DVD
players' image, wireless headphones, separate audio for the front and back
of the vehicle and audio interface to a digital surround sound system make
the experience better than many family room set-ups.”

Even the longest of drives can't take the fun out of such a unique and fun
way to travel. Gather up all the old favorite videos, add some new movies
to the mix, and your rolling film festival is ready to hit the road. Add a
TV tuner and antenna and it's possible to include local broadcast stations
in the system programming. And surely don't leave out the video game
controllers. Appreciative audiences (those now mesmerized kids in the rear
seat) may even protest at the thought of stopping or exiting the “theatre.”
Quite a change from the traditional can't-wait-till-we-get-there mindset of
most car-bound families. Another bonus – by limiting distractions from
bored and cranky children, you can better concentrate on what's important –
the road ahead.

“After a trip with a mobile entertainment system, you'll wonder how you
ever managed without it,” says Michalove. “With so many programming options
available, it's like hiring the ultimate babysitter, only this one never
gets tired or runs out of ideas. The systems really give drivers and other
adults a break – which is vital for both an enjoyable trip and ultimate
safety.”
