Innovations Spur Demand for Sensors from Semiconductor Manufacturers

SAN ANTONIO--July 24, 2001--Advances in technology will accelerate demand for sensors in the semiconductor industry.
The introduction of smart technology will boost demand for magnetic sensors as new silicon-based ultrasonic sensors will offer semiconductor manufacturing equipment industry, firms cost-effective solutions with superior performance geared for high-volume applications.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.sensors.frost.com), "World Ultrasonic, Capacitive and Magnetic Sensors in Semiconductor Markets," reveals this market generated $124.9 million in 2000 and is projected to reach $201.0 million 2007.
Research and development remains a top priority for participants. The challenge for many will be to produce better products than those made in-house by large semiconductor firms.
"Providing complete solutions will be one means to entice customers," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Daniela Carrillo. "Customers prefer to have one supplier rather than several contractors for various components and services."
Semiconductor manufacturing equipment producers demand custom-made solutions to meet flow, level, proximity and pressure needs. Globalization should also be an essential component of strategic thinking.
"Smaller sensor manufacturers need to adopt a more international perspective," says Carrillo. "Sensor manufacturers must target not one market, but several since the semiconductor industry is also adopting a more international vision."
"Latin America is a potential region for sensor and semiconductors companies in the United States and Europe that want to expand their business operations, although this region does not represent a large percentage of the total market due to inexpensive labor cost and potential industrial opportunities in those regions."
Frost & Sullivan presents 2001 Market Engineering Awards to companies that have worked diligently to make a positive contribution to the sensor industry. These market specific awards are presented to Carlo Gavazzi, Fargo Controls, Infineon Technologies, A.G., Lion Precision, Division of AQT Inc., and Pepperl + Fuchs.
