Winchester Presents New Challenges for Drivers
 

            Fayetteville, GA -            When United Speed Alliance Racing brings its Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division to Winchester Speedway for this weekend's running of the Lucas Oil 250, one thing will be evident to every driver:  the track is fast. With the track's 34-degree banking, the 550-horsepowered, steel-bodied ProCup cars will reach some of the fastest speeds of the season.

            One driver who has some experience on the fast one-half mile is Seymour, Indiana's Richard Hampton.

            "Winchester is a fast track," said Hampton. "It is a lot like Bristol and Salem Speedways. You have to look a couple of cars ahead of you because things happen so fast there. You can be in trouble before you know it."

            Hampton also stated that while he has experience on the track, it might not be the advantage drivers think.

            "We feel like we will be fast right out of the trailer," added Hampton. "The drivers should be able to pick up pretty quick how to get around this place."

            Getting around the track will be a challenge for some because of the preferred groove.

            "A driver will have to have his car handling well," Hampton said. "You have to drive the car in deep and the groove starts out in the middle and drifts up the track in the turns. If you are not handling well, it is going to be a long day."

            The track will be the eighth stop on the USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division schedule with just three races remaining on the regular season schedule. Mardy Lindley continues to hold on to the points lead without visiting victory lane.

            "We have had a consistent year so far," added Lindley. "We want to get into victory lane as bad as anybody but we also have to remember the points situation. You want to be as high up (in the standings) as you can because it determines where you start in the championship series."

            Lindley leads Brian Vickers by 23-points entering this weekend's race while Jeff Agnew sits in third after his first win of the season two weeks ago at Jennerstown Speedway.

            "We wanted the win at Jennerstown, but Jeff was able to get by us for the win," said Vickers. "We hope to get the Stewart Components Chevrolet back into victory lane this weekend. It is going to be a challenge at Winchester because of the speed and staying out of trouble is going to be key."

            Vickers won at Chemung Speedrome back in June and is one of just five drivers to visit victory lane in the Northern Division.
