Alex Zanardi

#66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard
Michigan 500 - Race Notes/Quotes - Sunday, July 22, 2001
Michigan Speedway - Brooklyn, Mich. - 2-Mile Tri-Oval
Round 11 of 21 on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series

Alex Zanardi and his #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard
retired on Lap 180 of today's Michigan 500 with electrical problems.
Ironically, it was the same problem experienced by his teammate Tony Kanaan
and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard for the previous 29 laps,
and Kanaan also retired at the same time.

Zanardi started 14th and worked his way up to seventh place, one lap behind
the leaders, when a misfire prompted him to pit on Lap 180. It was deemed
an alternator failure just like the one that put his teammate Kanaan out of
the race.

The next event on the schedule is next weekend's Target Grand Prix (July
27-29) at Chicago Motor Speedway, Round 12 of the 21-race CART FedEx
Championship Series for 2001.

ALEX ZANARDI

"The team saw that I was generating no voltage. I was hoping we could just
ignore it, but in reality it was only going to be a matter of time before we
could not continue. I just got my car to where it could run comfortably
with the leaders and I was looking forward to the last 100 miles of racing.
It was a good run while it lasted. I feel very good about the future of
this team. Unfortunately, today was just a bad day."
