July 18, 2001Over the last five National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Winston Drag Racing seasons, few - if any - teams can claim the success Team Winston has enjoyed. Gary Scelzi and Angelle Savoie have literally done it all, winning national events, special events and most importantly, Winston Championships.
Scelzi is the senior member of Team Winston, having been with the Alan Johnson-owned squad since the beginning of the 1997 season. Savoie joined the team at the sixth national event of the 1998 season on her George Bryce-owned Suzuki.
Since the popular duo became teammates at Virginia Motorsports Park, Scelzi and Savoie have formed two of the best-performing teams in the series. In the 90 national events where each has competed under the Team Winston banner, either Scelzi or Savoie have held the top position in the NHRA Winston Drag Racing point standings at an amazing 61 races (67.8 percent).
Scelzi and Savoie have combined for 39 national event victories, three Budweiser Shootout crowns, a Winston Invitational title, 47 low qualifier efforts and 62 final-round appearances with Team Winston. They have a cumulative elimination-round record of 331-111 (.749 win percentage), and most importantly, four NHRA Winston Championships between them.
