Double-Digit Decreases At Most Northern California Pumps; Bay Area Continues to Pay Highest Prices In Nation
SAN FRANCISCO--July 17, 2001--In just 30 days, Northern California gas prices tumbled from record-high prices, dropping over twenty cents in some cities according to AAA's monthly gas survey released today. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded self-serve gas in Northern California dropped 16 cents to $1.83, the lowest price since March 2001, according to AAA's monthly gas survey. The Bay Area average is $1.94, finally dipping below the two-dollar mark. In one month, the national average plummeted 23 cents to $1.43.
"Although California prices remain stubbornly above the national average, this drop in prices is most welcome," said Bronwyn Hogan, AAA spokeswoman. "The decreases range from 6 cents to 27 cents a gallon in Northern California, with San Francisco remaining the only city paying above $2."
Southern California reports an average of $1.84, a drop of 17 cents in one month, with Los Angeles at $1.87. Bakersfield prices plunged 38 cents to $1.66 a gallon.
The California average fell 17 cents to $1.83 a gallon.
"Soaring and erratic gas prices combined with a sluggish economy have decreased demand for gasoline during the traditionally high-demand season," Said Alan Kovski, energy analyst. "We expect this welcome downward trend to continue throughout the rest of the summer."
