BUCK WINS AT THE TORONTO MOLSON INDY
Castrol Super Series // Round #6 // July 14, 2001 // Exhibition Place //
Toronto, ON
TORONTO, ON - Robin Buck, the road racing specialist who won the inaugural
Castrol Super Series event at the Toronto Molson Indy in '99, returned to
victory lane on Saturday afternoon at the Exhibition Place track. The
UAP/NAPA Pontiac Grand Prix driver started on the pole for the 31-lap race
and led all but two circuits en route to his second career Super Series
win. A large, sun-drenched crowd cheered Buck to the victory.
Finishing second to the Oakville, ON resident was the Home Hardware
Chevrolet of Don Thomson Jr. The Hamilton, ON racer was involved in a
multi-car crash during qualifying on Saturday morning and was relived that
the repairs that he and his team made during the day were effective.
Following the race, Thomson said he "didn't have enough car left" to
challenge Buck for the win.
The third podium position went to Barrie, ON driver Al Turner, who started
fifth in his Blue Streak Intrepid. Turner was pushing hard late in the race
and grazed the wall on the entrance to the front straightaway. According to
Turner, when he first hit the wall, he was convinced that he'd ruined his
chances of even finishing the race. Fortunately for him, though, he was
able to soldier on to a third place finish and even threatened Thomson for
second in the final laps.
The race was the final event of the Saturday schedule at the Toronto
Molson Indy and marked the halfway point of the Castrol Super Series
season. With six races remaining, the chase for the Castrol Cup is
incredibly tight. With his second place finish, Al Turner grabbed the
points lead by a single point over Don Thomson (864 to 863). Just one point
back (with 862) is Kerry Micks, who held the lead since winning the season
opener at Delaware Speedway in May. Micks was involved in a pair of
incidents in turn 3 at the end of the Lakeshore Blvd. straight and finished
11th.
The second half of the Castrol Super Series season commences in two weeks
at Montreal's Autodrome St-Eustache.
