SANTOS, HENTGES, AND BERNSTEIN DO BATTLE AT WOODBURN

                WOODBURN, Ore. - In the final rounds of qualifying at
Woodburn Dragstrip, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Rick Santos and
Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Pat Austin took the top qualifier honors.
Santos of Brentwood, Calif., made the quarter-mile run in 5.441 seconds at
258.02 mph to put him in the pole position. The run also gave Santos both
ends of the track record, taking the elapsed time record away from Brandon
Bernstein who set the record in Fridays qualifying.
This weekends Les Schwab Tires Challenge could be a pivotal point in the
season as Santos and Bernstein trail national points leader Mark Hentges by
38 points and 67 points respectively for the national championship. Hentges
of Federal Way, Wash., qualified number five with a best lap of 5.570
seconds at 254.88 mph. Hentges will square off against Bernstein in round
one of eliminations.
 Tacoma, Wash., resident Austin made a 5.845-second 244.43 mph pass to put
him at the top of his category. Austin and his Uncle Bucky Austin traded
the number one spot back and forth with Bucky landing in the number two
spot with a 5.852 seconds at 242.32 mph. The two Austin's have 14
championship between them here at Woodburn.
Top qualifiers in others classes are Brian Hyerstay of Eugene, Ore., in
Comp; Frank Grossi of Upland, Calif., in Super Stock; and Sean Cour of
Brush Prairie, Wash., in Stock.
The five competitors will share the $2,500 Sealed Power Low Qualifier
bonus.
Eliminations begin Sunday at 9 a.m.  Gates at Woodburn Dragstrip open at 8
a.m.  Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars run at noon.  For more
