Course
Round 10 of 21 on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard will start
Sunday's Molson Indy Toronto from the fourth position after capping a solid
two days of practice and qualifying today. Kanaan recorded a fast
qualifying lap of 57.923 seconds (an average of 109.076 mph) around the
1.721-mile temporary road course at Exhibition Place to take the
outside-second-row starting position. It was the fastest lap in today's
first group of qualifiers, made up primarily of drivers from the lower half
of the driver points standings entering the weekend. The top group time
today earned Kanaan a spot in the "fast group" qualifying session for the
next road course event at Mid-Ohio next month.
Teammate Alex Zanardi, in the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
Honda-Reynard, also qualifying in the first group, turned in a fast lap of
58.945 seconds (107.185 mph) to take the outside-12th-row starting position.
Defending series champion Gil de Ferran grabbed the pole today with a fast
qualifying lap of 57.703 seconds (109.492 mph) with his teammate, Helio
Castroneves, grabbing the outside-front-row starting spot at 57.767 seconds
(109.370 mph). Kenny Brack was third at 57.886 seconds (109.146 mph).
Race time Sunday is 1p.m. EDT with a live broadcast set for ABC-TV. Sunday
morning's 30-minute warm-up session begins at 9 a.m. The CART2DAY warm-up
show will be broadcast at 11 a.m. EDT Sunday.
TONY KANAAN
"I am so happy for my guys. We've had a very strong weekend so far, and
they deserve it. After three bad race weekends in a row, we were about as
low as you can go. But nobody gave up. We all stuck together, and I think
it made us work harder, and it made us stronger. As you can see, I have had
a really good car all weekend. We had a problem this morning in practice
with the primary car, and it turns out the back-up car was six-tenths
quicker. We only got our 20 minutes of guaranteed green time in the
qualifying session, which probably cost us an even better time. I know that
I could have gone faster if I would have gotten in one more run. We didn't
get to make the kind of changes we usually have time to make during
qualifying. But, hey, look at where we are compared to where we've been the
last few races. This is a big boost for the team. This is a big boost for
me. Now we just have to put it all together tomorrow to make the weekend
complete. We're back!"
