SLAUGHTER CASHES IN ON CRYSTAL CLAY
For Immediate Release (7-7-01)

CRYSTAL, MICH - Defending champion Robbin Slaughter, in his own Carmen’s
Vacuum-NAPA Auto Parts Ford Ranger, chalked up his second consecutive
ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series victory Saturday night on the 1/3-mile
Crystal Motor Speedway clay oval in Crystal, Michigan.

The current point leader passed veteran Jack Weethee 15 laps deep into
the 50 lap main event, and then worked hard to hold him off to score his
seventh career ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series victory. The win, his
seventh on tour, ties Slaughter with Chad Guinn as all-time winners in
the relatively new touring series.

“Racing on dirt is pretty new to us, but I can tell you we’re liking it
more all the time,” said Slaughter. “I’d like to thank my crew chief Tom
Cumbow who, like always, had the truck dialed in right off the trailer.
The whole crew works so hard, and it shows.”

Weethee, who earned the Old Milwaukee Pole award with a new one-lap
track record of 17.270 seconds, pressed Slaughter continually throughout
the race before his engine began to overheat. And while Slaughter and
Weethee were dicing for the lead, Fairfield, Ohio driver Darren Jones
put on a show all his own charging from 18th to second in the final
running order. Jones, after a late-race battle with Weethee, took over
the runner-up spot and began to close in on Slaughter for the lead.
Jones, in the Pusch’s Restaurant Ford Ranger, got within two lengths of
Slaughter before time ran out. However, Jones would still be credited
with the Ed & Company Hard Charger award for his outstanding
performance. Weethee, whose engine continually lost power, settled for
third in his Weethee Builders-Amerihost Inn Ford. Chad Guinn finished
fourth in the BFI-Northland Collision Ford with rookie Mark Otting
rounding put the top-five.

Chris Shell, making his career-first ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series
start, finished sixth in the Braun Auto Group Ford with ’99 champion
Bill Withers trailing in seventh in the Mannings USA-Hall Electronics
Ford. Rookie Eugene Crase finished a respectable eighth in front of
ninth place finisher Stan Maitlen in the ARC Abrasives-GSI Ford. Dave
Reeb completed the top-ten finishers in the Accurate Logistics Ford.

Tully Esterline raced as high as third and was contending for the win
before electrical troubles relegated the Pettisville, Ohio driver to
12th in the final running order.

In addition to Slaughter’s prize money, the Columbus, Ohio driver picked
up the Cloyes Gear Halfway Leader award while Jones, in addition to the
hard charger award, picked up the Hawk Best Brake of the race award.
