CTS Announces Cost-Effective Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillators - VCXOs - for Fiber Optic Datacom Applications

    ELKHART, Ind.--July 9, 2001--CTS Corporation today announced a new "Panther(TM) PLL+" brand of miniature, surface mount voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) products for use in a wide range of datacom applications including SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, STM-1, STS-3c and OC-3 through OC-192. The Panther(TM) PLL+" brand oscillator (CTS Model 344), is a lower-cost solution, as compared to more expensive, and supply-limited, high frequency fundamental crystal based VCXOs. The served available market for potential applications is expected to reach $30 million annually.
    "Housed in a 9 mm x14 mm hermetically sealed ceramic package, this family of oscillators, with ECL/PECL outputs, was designed for fiber optic, as well as other datacom applications where elastic buffers, or stores, exist between the transmit and receive channels," according to James Hart, vice president and general manager of CTS Frequency Products. "Phase jitter at 155.52 MHz is typically less than 15 pico-seconds RMS (5 KHz to 20 MHz bandwidth) over the entire temperature range, which is significantly better than other commercial alternatives. In fact, customer application testing has confirmed that the Panther(TM) PLL+ brand product is one of the lowest jitter, PLL based VCXOs on the market, making it the product of choice," Hart concluded.
    CTS Model 344 oscillators are designed to provide a minimum Absolute Pull Range (APR) of plus/minus 50 ppm for 20 years inclusive of all conditions. Typical frequency versus temperature variation, over minus 40 degrees C to plus 85 degrees C, is plus/minus 10 ppm. Nominal frequency deviation at time of shipment is plus/minus 100 ppm. All of these are conditions typically required of infrastructure manufacturers.
