Weaver Earns Sixth X-1R Pole of Season at Road America

Weaver Earns Sixth X-1R Pole of Season at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (July 7, 2001) -- Englishman James Weaver captured his sixth X-1R Pole in seven races during qualifying today for Sunday's Road America 500 presented by the Chicago Tribune. Weaver piloted the Thetford/Norcold/Goodyear-sponsored #16 Ford-powered Riley & Scott to a 1:58.195 lap at 121.833 mph around the four-mile road course. The fastest lap came during the closing laps of the 15-mintue qualifying session, besting the time of Didier Theys, of Phoenix, who had previously held the top spot with his 1:58.835 lap time in the LISTA/Yokahama-sponsored #27 Judd-engined Ferrari of Doran Lista Racing.

The second Dyson Racing Team car will start behind the #16 Ford in the second row with Dorsey Schroeder, of Osage Beach, Mo., behind the wheel. Jon Field, of Dublin, Ohio, will take the green flag beside Schroeder in his Banana Joe's #37 Judd-powered Lola of Intersport Racing. Many were surprised by Field's unimpressive qualifying time of 2:00.663 after he led the practice sessions with a time nearly three seconds faster. However, the team reports that they suffered from an under steering problem during qualifying, which they foresee being resolved before Sunday's race.

Scott Maxwell, of Uxbridge, Ont., captured his first-ever class pole position in the SportsRacing Prototype II (SRPII) class after clocking a 2:05.042 lap at 115.161 mph in the Quickblade/Multimatic Engineering-sponsored #25 Nissan-engined Lola of Multimatic Motorsports. The Road America 500 will be only the second Rolex Series race for the Multimatic team, who earned a podium finish in their series debut last month at the ConAgra Foods U.S. Road Racing Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Maxwell will start Sunday's race on the inside fourth row, with SRPII driver points-leader Andy Lally, of Northpoint, N.Y., starting beside him in the Oberto Beef Jerky #22 Nissan Lola of Archangel Motorsport Services.

The X-1R Performance Lubricants/Goodyear-sponsored #09 Corvette C5 of Flis Motorsports Team X-1R will lead the American GT (AGT) class to the green flag for the third race this season. Craig Conway, of Daytona Beach, Fla., recorded a 2:12.715 lap time to lead the AGT class and earn an eighth-row starting position.

Randy Pobst, of Melbourne, Fla., led the GT class during qualifying in the Fordahl Motorsports/Crazy Redhead Racing #15 Porsche GT3 RS. Pobst's 2:14.454 lap time midway through the 15-minute qualifying session could not be topped by any other GT cars, though Kevin Buckler, of Sonoma, Calif., came closest with a 2:14.806 lap in The Racer's Group #66 Porsche GT3 RS.

Chris Bingham, of Kirkland, Wash., was the single GTS driver to take to the track during qualifying. Bingham clocked a 2:09.911 lap at 110.845 mph to place the BASF/HCI/Yokohama/Park Place Ltd.-sponsored Saleen S7R of Fordahl Motorsports/Park Place Racing on the seventh row for Sunday's start.

The Road America 500 will get underway at noon on Sunday. It will mark the seventh race of the 10-race season for the Rolex Sports Car Series.
