LAPOINT CAPTURES POLE FOR ROUND NINE AT ROAD AMERICA

	ELKHART LAKE, WIS. (July 6, 2001) –Jason LaPoint, of Woodburn, Ore.,
captured the pole for Sunday morning’s Round Nine of the U.S. F2000 National
Championship . Completing the
top-three was Tonis Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill. and Mike Potekhen, of
Phoenix, Ariz. The top ACC qualifier was Scott Rubenzer, of Brookfield, Wis.
	Qualifying on the 4.0-mile road course was run under ideal weather
conditions. In the early stages of the session numerous cars were posting
times in the 2:16 range. As the session progressed LaPoint and Kasemets
moved to the top of the chart. At the 20-minute mark, of the 30-minute
session, LaPoint, driving the No. 89 Infinity/Regency Aviation/TrackMagic
Van Diemen Ford, became the first driver to better the existing lap record.
During the last five minutes of qualifying LaPoint and Kasemets swapped the
top spot numerous, each time bettering the lap record. At the checkered
flag, LaPoint had captured his second pole of 2001, with a time of 2:14.862
(106.766 mph). Kasemets, in the No. 6 MKInd/Flexovit/TMI/TAC.com/Pabst
Racing Services Van Diemen Ford, qualified second. Driving the No. 87 P.D.
R./TwinSeason.com Van Diemen Ford,  Potekhen qualified third with a fast lap
on the last lap of the session. Rubenzer, in the No. 11 Storage Battery
Systems/Trojan Battery Co. Carbir Ford, qualified 14th overall, to post the
best ACC time.
	“The car was working great,”said LaPoint, who holds the Formula Continental
race lap record at Road America. “I was able to really put it on the edge
and just go for a quick lap. The team has really worked hard, and it’s nice
reward them with a pole.”
	“I just wasn’t as sharp as I needed to be,” said Kasemets, who won  Round
Seven. “The car was solid and I was hoping for the pole, but I’m happy with
second. It’s a long race so we’ll see how it plays out.”
	“I just went for it at the end of the session, said Potekhen, who won the
prestigious June Sprints at Road America. “Early in the session I just
wanted to shake the car down after the crew repaired it following my big
accident yesterday.”
	Completing the top-five was Piero Rodarte, of Mexico City, Mexico and Peter
Gray, of Aberdeen, Scotland.
