AMERICA'S PROMISE

WHAT:On July 9th, President George Bush is hosting an event at the White House
where he will sign a declaration “Fulfilling the Promise of America” that
underscores his commitment to children and youth.
Founding chairman General Colin L. Powell and current chairman Marc Racicot,
former governor of Montana, will present the Report to the Nation 2001 to the
President. The event will also feature America’s Promise newly appointed Youth
Partnership Team, 15 outstanding young people, ages 14-22 from across the nation
who were selected to serve as the youth advisory group to the organization. All
members of the team have demonstrated significant leadership and service to
their communities.
HISTORY:General Colin Powell, USA (Ret) is the founding chairman of America’s
Promise¾The Alliance for Youth. It was launched after the President’s Summit
for America’s Future in 1997 where Presidents G.H.W. Bush, Carter, Clinton and
Ford, with Nancy Reagan representing President Reagan, challenged the country to
make children and youth a national priority. The mission of America’s Promise
is to build the character and competence of youth by fulfilling the Five
Promises for all young people: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start,
marketable skills and opportunities to serve.
