Electronics Retailer Launches First in a Series of Tech Tips for New Consumer Education Program FORT WORTH, Texas, July 3 RadioShack is launching a new consumer Tech Tips program designed to support the company's mission of demystifying technology for the mass market. The first in the program's series includes tips on using wireless phones hands-free while driving. The launch of this program coincides with the heavy summer driving season and the recent passage of a New York law banning the use of hand-held wireless telephones just last week. "Nationwide less than 10 percent of wireless phone users are equipped with a hands-free device. We believe one of the main reasons for this low adoption rate is a lack of education about the advantages of hands-free devices," said Leonard Roberts, chairman and chief executive officer of RadioShack Corporation. "Our sales associates undergo extensive training and certification in wireless phones and accessories so they are prepared to help consumers understand their choices in hands-free." Tips for Choosing a Hands-free Device With so many styles designed to accommodate a wide range of personal needs and lifestyles, there can be confusion among consumers as to which hands-free device is right for them. For millions of consumers who have not gone hands- free yet with their wireless phones RadioShack offers these Tech Tips: 1. Determine if the phone has a 2.5 mm headset jack. The first step is knowing whether or not your wireless phone has a headset jack. This is where hands-free devices usually plug into the phone. -- If a phone does not have a jack, it can often be upgraded with an adapter; however, adapters vary by phone model. The hands-free device will plug into this adapter. Check to make sure the adapter is made to fit your phone model. -- If a phone is equipped with a 2.5 mm headset jack, then the next decision is selecting the hands-free device that fits your needs. 2. Determine how and where the wireless phone is typically used. If you want to be totally hands-free when using your wireless phone for driving, walking, shopping or sitting at a desk, there are two categories: -- An integrated earpiece provides a near-custom fit in the outer ear and has a built-in microphone. These devices are completely portable and can be used in virtually any situation. Prices range from $19.99 to $39.99. -- An earpiece/boom mike combo is a device with a microphone on a short boom. Many of the headset kits have an integrated earpiece and microphone. A combo unit provides the same conveniences as the integrated earpiece since it is transportable. Prices range from $19.99 to $29.99. If you do not want an earpiece, what are the options? -- Speakerphone kits can be used with most phone models and are limited to use inside the car. These devices plug into a car's cigarette lighter to provide hands-free convenience without requiring the use of an earbud or headset. The added bonus with speakerphone kits is that they recharge the wireless phone's battery while the phone is in use. Prices begin at $59.99. -- Newer model handsets and carrier services offer built-in speaker phone capability. 3. Select a hands-free device for comfort as well as convenience. A hands-free device will only provide convenience if you use it. Keep these tips in mind when choosing a comfortable fit: -- The integrated earpiece, sometimes referred to as an "earbud," fits in the outer ear. -- The earpiece/boom mike combo fits in-ear or over-the-ear. -- If these do not feel comfortable to you, then a speakerphone kit might be the right choice since it does not require an earpiece. 4. Consider upgrading your handset. There are other options available today on many handsets and through wireless carrier services to aid in driving hands free. These include: -- Voice recognition capabilities allow the user to speak a name or number and the phone automatically dials the number. This provides for totally hands-free dialing. -- Voice-mail captures the calls so you can return calls at your convenience. "The good news is that there are hands-free options available to fit just about any lifestyle, need and budget," said Stewart Asimus, senior division vice president and general manager of RadioShack's Connecting People strategic business unit. "With locations in every neighborhood in America, RadioShack is perfectly positioned to help Americans choose the most appropriate wireless device for their needs." All of the retailer's hands-free offerings must pass a rigorous set of quality control standards that ensure a product's superior performance and durability before it can be added to the wireless accessory lineup. As a leader in wireless phone sales, RadioShack was one of the first retailers to offer a variety of hands-free products. Because of this leadership position, RadioShack was also the first retailer to prominently feature wireless hands-free devices and their benefits in a national advertising campaign beginning last spring. The company continues to advocate the use of a hands-free device to enhance the safety and convenience of a wireless phone while driving in its advertising and marketing efforts, including print, broadcast and radio ads. About RadioShack RadioShack Corporation is the nation's largest and most trusted consumer-electronics retailer, and offers both on- and off-line shopping capabilities. With more than 7,100 stores and dealers, RadioShack sells more wireless telephones, telecommunications products and electronic parts and accessories than any other retailer. It is estimated that 94 percent of all Americans live or work within five minutes of a RadioShack store or dealer.
