Toyota Reports Best-Ever June And Sets Second-Quarter and First-Half Sales Records
TORRANCE, Calif., July 3 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported its strongest June ever with sales of 158,633, up 19.8 percent over last June. The record June resulted in best-ever second-quarter sales of 466,858 units. Toyota also posted its best-ever first half in 44 years of business in the U.S., with calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales of 865,381, up 6.4 percent, shattering last year's record first half. "The strong, steady pace of consumer spending continues to drive industry sales," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "In spite of the downturn in other key sectors of the economy, the auto industry could well achieve its third-best sales year ever." The Toyota and Lexus Divisions both shattered previous record June sales. The Toyota Division recorded a best-ever June with 139,516 units sold, up 20.1 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division posted best-ever June sales with 19,117 vehicles, an increase of 18.0 percent. Consumers geared up for summer travel as Toyota Division's light trucks led the sales charge with best-ever June sales of 63,448 units, up 44.1 percent from last year. The redesigned Tacoma posted hearty June sales of 14,838 units, up 26.7 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup enjoyed best-ever monthly sales of 10,608, up 27.9 percent. The RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) enjoyed best-ever June sales of 6,938, an increase of 109.1 percent. The all-new Highlander mid-size SUV and Sequoia full-size SUV recorded sales of 8,228 and 6,198 units, respectively. Camry enjoyed a strong sales month with 35,479 units, up 5.3 percent. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan continued to post impressive sales with a record 1,534 units delivered in June, bringing the year-to-date total to 7,406. The Corolla compact sedan recorded 23,382 sales, an increase of 17.4 percent. The Lexus Division was led by best-ever June passenger-car sales of 11,690, an increase of 42.3 percent over the same period last year. The ES 300 luxury sedan recorded 3,445 sales, up 7.2 percent, while the flagship LS 430 luxury sedan posted 2,724 sales, an increase of 213.1 percent. The GS 300 luxury sport sedan posted sales of 1,986 units, up 12.9 percent, and the all-new SC 430 hardtop convertible posted sales of 1,335. Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 64.9 percent of total June sales.
