Toray Nylon Thai to Expand Industrial Polyester Filament
Business

BANGKOK, Thailand--July 3, 2001--Toray
Industries, Inc. announced today that it will double production
capacity for industrial polyester filament used in safety belts at
Toray Nylon Thai Co., Ltd. (TNT) in Bangkok, Thailand.
The increase, costing approximately 1 billion yen (400 million
bahts), will raise capacity to 8,000 tons per year beginning May 2002.
The move is part of Toray's plan to reengineer its business
structure, centering on the Japanese market, to meet the challenges of
the evolving global market. The company is developing the competitive
advantages of its industrial fibers for six product segments: tires,
airbags, safety belts, fishing nets, sewing thread and general
materials.
Thailand is a key base for Toray's production of industrial
fibers. The country is not only a major producer of clothing fibers,
it also has the ASEAN region's largest automotive industry, including
many Japanese components makers.
Toray has positioned TNT as a strategic base for the production of
nylon and polyester synthetic fibers. Expanding the plant will enable
Toray to globalize this business, particularly supplying fibers for
safety belt use. The company will also develop business with domestic
and local Japanese companies, centering on automotive products made by
these companies and building and construction materials that they use.
For this, TNT will cooperate with industrial polyester textile makers
Luckytex Public Co., Ltd. (LTX) and Thai Toray Textile Mills Public
Co., Ltd. (TTTM) in Thailand.
Toray, following adoption of the Global Re-Engineering Plan for
its apparel polyester filament business last year, looks forward to
enhancing both the competitiveness and the size of its industrial
fiber business.
