Studer Makes It Three Out of Four
 

 

            HOLLAND, NY -            Although he didn't compete when the USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division season began in April, Sean Studer has made everyone take notice, winning the Naturally Fresh Foods 250 presented by Oneganos Pure Water Saturday night at Holland International Speedway. The event was held in front of the largest crowd to see a USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division race in 2001.

            Studer, who led 219 of 250 laps, collected his third win in four races. He won back-to-back races at Louisville Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Raceway Park earlier this year.

            Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division points leader Mardy Lindley maintained his lead in the standings with a second-place finish. Brian Vickers ended a hectic day in third, with Charlie Ford and Regan Smith rounding out the top-five.

            "I can't believe how good this car is," said Studer. "I have a great crew and they worked their tails off to give me a good car. It showed today."

            Studer won the Sunoco Pole Award and was flanked on the outside row by Jeff Agnew. Agnew took the lead on the first lap and remained out front until disaster struck the 1998 USAR Hooters ProCup Series National Champion.

            Agnew was leading Studer by two car lengths when Brent Sherman spun in front of Agnew. Agnew tried to avoid Sherman but  he hit the left front of his NGA Hooters Tour Chevrolet into Sherman, forcing him to pit for repairs.

            "We just can't get any luck," said Agnew. "We had a really fast race for the second week in a row and bad luck hits us again."

            Studer was able to go high on the track and move into the lead for the remainder of the night.

            On of the night's biggest surprises was the finish of local favorite Sam Fullone. Fullone, from nearby North Collins, NY, finished sixth on the lead lap after running as high as third during the race. This was just the second race for Fullone who crashed during his first race with the Series in Chemung two weeks ago.

            "This was great," said Fullone. "I have to thank everyone who helped us get this car ready for tonight. We have won races at this track and we were happy to run well in front of everyone."

            Though the race was slowed eight times by caution, only a pair of multi-car incidents occurred on the high-banked 3/8-mile track.

            After Agnew was involved in an incident while leading, Studer almost suffered the same fate while leading on lap 140.

            B.J. Underdown and Danny Abold made contact in turn two. Abold and Travis Ayres also spun directly in front of Studer, who was able to drive his car high in the middle of the turn and avoid the incident.

            "That was really close," added Studer. "We went high and luckily we were able to get by on the high side."

            The other multi-car incident occurred when Bill Plemons, Jr. and Dale Delozier made contact while both were running in the top-10 on lap 196. Both drivers were able to continue with Delozier finishing 10th and Plemons 19th.

            In addition to his first career top-10 finish Fullone also garnished the coveted Miller Lite Rookie of the Race Award. Fullone and Bobby Gegetskas each advanced 12 positions during the race to share the W.J. Plemons Investments Hard Charger Award.  

            In addition to his Sunoco Pole Award, Studer also led at halfway to win the Lucas Oil Products Halfway Leader Award.

            Lindley leads Vickers by 48 points in the chase for the USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division point standings. Mike Herman, Jr. remains in third with Smith and Plemons rounding out the top-five. 

Although he missed the first two races in the division, Studer has used his three wins to move into 14th in the point standings.             The USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division returns to action at Jennerstown Speedway on Saturday July 14 for the Lucas Oil Products 250.

NEWS & NOTES
  a.. Eleven USAR Hooters ProCup Series drivers visited the Children's Hospital of Buffalo Friday afternoon. Those drivers: Danny Abold, John Julicher, Chad Beahr, Jason McLellan, Donnie Hill, Sam Fullone, Kyle Shoemaker, Bill Plemons, Jr., B.J. Underdown, Tim Bainey, Jr. and Bobby Gegetskas. Naturally Fresh Foods donated goodie bags that were distributed to the children. Aaron's Rents, sponsors of Bobby Gegetskas, donated t-shirts and matchbox-style cars. Donnie Hill and members of his team donated stuffed animals and yo-yos for the children; while Danny Abold and his team made goodie bags for all of the children in addition to the bags supplied by Naturally Fresh Foods.
  b.. The race featured one new driver to the Series. Grant Andrews, Jr. made his first start of the season. Unfortunately, his Chevrolet suffered mechanical problems and finished 28th.
  c.. The race was the midway point of the Northern Division schedule. The Division will feature five more regular season events with returns scheduled to Jennerstown Speedway (July 14) and Chemung Speedrome (September 8). The Series will make its first visits to Cayuga Speedway, Illiana Speedway and Winchester Speedway before the Four Champions Championship Series begins in Chicago on Saturday September 15th.
