Thomson takes inaugural Kawartha win
Castrol Super Series // Round #5 // July 1, 2001 // Kawartha Speedway
'Budweiser 150'

FRASERVILLE, ON - Two time Castrol Super Series champion Don Thomson Jr.
got back on the winning track on Sunday afternoon at Kawartha Speedway. The
Home Hardware Chevy driver started on the inside of the second row in the
Budweiser 150 - the first ever Super Series race held at the 3/8-mile
Peterborough area oval - and took the lead on lap 14 of the 150 lap chase.
The Hamilton, ON racer led every lap but one the rest of the way, en route
to his first win of the season. Thomson's victory kept alive the string of
not having a repeat winner in 2001. The first five rounds of the 12-event
tour have each produced different victors.
Finishing second to Thomson was two-time and defending Castrol Cup winner
Peter Gibbons. Driving his Canadian Tire Chevrolet, the Stouffville, ON
racer lined up fourth in the field of 27 starters and overcame an early
race incident in which he grazed the outside retaining wall. Gibbons
appeared to be quicker than Thomson immediately after some of the restarts,
but Thomson was eventually able to reassert his lead after a few laps.
Following a late race caution period, Gibbons managed to pull alongside of
Thomson and actually nosed ahead to take the lead on lap 138. But after a
lap of side-by-side action, Thomson pulled ahead and took the checkered
flag almost half a second ahead of Gibbons.
The race was reminiscent of the 2000 season, during which the majority of
the races came down to Thomson and Gibbons battling for the checkered flag.
The final podium position went to Mosport oval race winner Mark Dilley, who
started on the pole in the Budweiser 150 and led the first 13 laps before
relinquishing the front spot to Thomson. Kerry Micks, the points leader
entering the race, finished 15th, one lap behind the leaders.
