Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland - Race Notes/Quotes - Sunday, July 1, 2001
Burke Lakefront Airport - Cleveland, Ohio - 2.106-Mile Temporary Road Course
Round 9 of 21 on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard finished 16th
in today's Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland after rebounding from a multi-car
pileup on the very first turn of the race. Kanaan started fifth and was
rounding Turn 1 when Oriol Servia pushed the car of Patrick Carpentier
sideways into Kanaan's car and sent the two sliding off the track. Michel
Jourdain then hit the Hollywood car, causing significant damage to the nose.
Kanaan pitted to replace the nose and four tires and rejoined the race in
24th place. He was never a factor and finished a lap down.
Kanaan's teammate Alex Zanardi and the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
Honda-Reynard finished 13th today after a strong bid for a podium finish was
ruined by slight contact from behind by Max Wilson just after the second
round of pit stops on Lap 59 of a scheduled 101 laps. The contact punctured
Zanardi's left-rear tire, forcing another stop to replace the tire and
dropping him back to 19th. Dario Franchitti was the winner , followed by
Memo Gidley and Bryan Herta.
The next race on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series tour is in two
weeks for Round 10 at the Molson Indy Toronto (July 13-15).
TONY KANAAN
"All I have to say that the way things are going, luck is definitely not on
my side. I have no idea what happened, except for the fact that Carpentier
and me went off the track at the start. It was another big disappointment.
One of these days, the luck has to turn around. I didn't have the best car
out here all weekend, but I didn't even have a chance to see what we had for
the race. It's no fun cruising around back there. I'm ready for a weekend
off so we can regroup and come back strong for Toronto and the last half of
the season."
