VANCOUVER DRIVER RUTLEDGE STARTS FIFTH FINISHES SIXTH IN WET AND WILD
CLEVELAND ATLANTIC RACE
Lynx Racing driver David Rutledge, 23, of Vancouver, B.C. soldiered
through a difficult weekend at the Burke Lakefront Airport to start fifth
and finish sixth in today's CART Toyota Atlantic support race at the
Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland Presented by FirStar.
The event was won by Hoover Orsi, who moves into the lead of the
championship points battle with 74 points to Rutledge's 72. The Atlantic
series awards 20 points for a win, and there are seven races left in the
12-race Atlantic season. Round 6 of the 12 event CART Toyota Atlantic
Championship will be held in two weeks as part of the Molson Indy Toronto
at the Canadian National Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario Canada.
Rutledge was forced to qualify his backup car when his primary car
was damaged in an off-course excursion during Saturday morning practice.
He was third fast in the pre-race warmup Sunday morning, but suffered a
broken front wing in the first lap, first turn melee that has become a
trademark of the Cleveland race. The 32-lap event was red flagged
after 12 laps due to rain, allowing the team to switch to rain tires and
change the damaged nose.
"We've been developing our dry setup and had the race remained dry,
we would certainly have been on the podium," said Rutledge. "We didn't
have time to go to a full wet setup during the red flag, and so my car was
oversteering very badly. This kept me from putting the power down and the
cars that passed me just accelerated away at the exits of the turns.
Still, we brought the car home, scored some points, and we're confident of
re-taking the lead in the championship at Toronto."
