Michigan Great Leads Qualifying for Glass City 300
TOLEDO, Ohio – American Speed Association National Championship points leader Butch Miller, while still looking for his first win in the 2001 season, continued to show his dominance in qualifying, picking up his fourth pole of the 2001 seas on for Sunday’s Glass City 300 at Toledo Speedway. Miller turned a lap of 16.585 sec. (108.532 mph) midway through the session to take the top spot for tomorrow’s event.
“I am really happy to get the pole, but I would give up every pole for a win,” said Miller, who was fast in two of the day’s three practice sessions. “We really need a win.
“I was lucky to get some cloud cover, because our sticker run in practice wasn’t very good. We had a decent lap but Gary (St. Amant) was still quicker. I was concerned someone would turn a quicker lap because the track got cooler.”
“The pole moves Miller into third on the all-time list of career poles in ASA competition. Through his 20-year ASA career, the Coopersville, Michigan-native has collected 41 poles.
Defending ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant of Columbus turned in the second fastest time, clocking in a lap of 16.618 sec. (108.316 mph). Indianapolis’ Tim Taylor turned in his career best pole run, qualifying third for the Glass City 300. It tope his previous best, which came at Winchester Speedway in 2000.
“We had a good car all day, but I didn’t think it was that good,” said Taylor. “I thought I could turn a 16.7, but my mom told me to turn a 16.6. I went out and turned a 16.6 anyway.
“This track has a fine line between a good and bad run. If you miss it a little bit, you screw up the lap. I was fortunate to stay on that fine line. We are trying to turn our luck around. We need a good finish.”
Greg Stewart (16.691 sec./107.843) and Todd Rosebrugh (16.711 sec./107.713) rounded out the top five qualifiers. Scott Hansen, Mike Garvey, Robbie Pyle of Columbus, Mike Miller and Johnny Sauter round out the top 10.
Activities for Sunday begin with ASA’s exclusive on-track autograph session is scheduled for 11 a.m., with pre-race ceremonies starting at 12:15 p.m. and the Glass City 300 going green at 1 p.m.
