Stratasys Wins Orders for 19 Rapid Prototyping Systems

    MINNEAPOLIS--June 29, 2001--Rapid prototyping systems maker, Stratasys, , announced it has taken orders for 19 of its new FDM Titan(TM) systems since introducing it last month. The machines began shipping last week.
    The Titan builds models from polycarbonate, a high-impact-strength plastic that allows users to perform high-accuracy functional testing. Stratasys plans to add ABS plastic and PPSF (polyphenylsulfone) as Titan modeling materials in the future. PPSF is used in medical and high temperature applications or where resistance to chemical or petroleum agents is needed.
    "Customers have said this is what they want -- real manufacturing plastics for functional prototypes," says President Scott Crump. "Interest is strong."
    The first two Titans shipped to prototyping service bureaus in Japan. Ashio Kako Co. makes prototypes strictly for the automotive industry. Miyamoto Jushi Kogyo Co. provides both service bureau work as well as consulting in the engineering design, prototyping, and production process. Both companies will use the Titan to build models as well as master patterns for molding applications.
    Ashio picked the Titan because they have been satisfied with their existing Stratasys FDM Quantum machines, and they wanted the ability to functionally test models with the high-impact strength polycarbonate offers. Miyamoto says they chose the Titan not just for its capabilities but also because of Stratasys' strategic direction and corporate health. Stratasys will display the Titan in Japan for the first time at the upcoming DMS show (Design, Engineering & Manufacturing Solutions Expo and Conference) in Tokyo the first week of July.
    Like all Stratasys equipment, the FDM Titan requires no special facilities or venting and involves no hazardous materials or by-products. Stratasys systems typically represent the lowest total cost of ownership among the major rapid prototyping suppliers. The Titan operates on Stratasys Insight software, which uses the Windows NT platform.
