History:  General Colin Powell is the founding chairman of America’s Promise.  
It was founded after the President’s Summit for America’s Future in 1997 where 
Presidents G.H.W. Bush, Carter, Clinton and Ford, with Nancy Regan representing 
President Regan, challenged the country to make children and youth a national 
priority.  The mission of America’s Promise is to build the character and 
competence of youth by fulfilling the Five Promises for all young people: caring
adults, safe places, a healthy start, marketable skills and opportunities to 
serve.

What:  Today, at the National Conference for Community Volunteering and National
Service, America’s Promise unveiled Promise Station, which will be an online 
marketplace designed exclusively to help communities better organize resources 
and deliver them more effectively to kids.  Promise Station will enable parents,
schools, faith groups, youth organizations, businesses, local government, and 
more to identify and connect children and young people with the critical 
resources they need to succeed.

Promise Station was previewed at an event with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chairman 
of the Inner City Games Foundation, in San Diego on June 22nd.  

Where: 	Using the technology that was developed by PricewaterhouseCoopers and 
funding from Ford Motor Company, Promise Stations, are currently piloted in San 
Diego, Cleveland, Kansas City, Knoxville and Minneapolis/St. Paul.  There will 
be more than 60 communities by year-end and, ultimately, in every community in 
America.
