June 26, 2001MOSPORT, Ontario, Canada - The Lexus IS 300 earned its first pole position today in the compact sports sedan's fourth-ever race at the Grand-Am Cup event at Mosport. The No. 0 Team Lexus IS 300, driven by team owner/driver Chuck Goldsborough and Terry Borcheller, set a Grand-Am Cup Sports Touring (ST) class track record at Mosport in earning the manufacturer's first pole position since entering the Grand-Am Cup series in 2001.
"This is a great accomplishment for Lexus and the team," said Goldsborough. "We knew the IS 300 had a lot of potential, and being able to reach this goal in our fourth race is great. The car and the program are right on track to where we thought it should be at this point."
The No. 0 Team Lexus IS 300 turned a lap time of 1:35.878 in earning the pole and track record. The closest ST-class competitor was more than 0.8 seconds behind Goldsborough, Baltimore, Md., and Borcheller, Phoenix, Ariz. Piloted by new driver Jason Potter and Andy Lally, the No. 2 Team Lexus IS 300 also turned in a quick time of 1:37.737 in earning the seventh starting position in a ST-class field of 14 competitors. Potter, Oxford, Ohio, is the current points leader in the Grand-Am Cup ST class and joined Team Lexus this week prior to the Mosport event. He has two victories this season at Daytona and Homestead. Lally, Long Island, N.Y., led the ST class for first third of the race at Mid-Ohio on June 9.
Team Lexus will aim for the IS 300 first victory later today as the Grand-Am Cup race drops the green flag for the three-hour race at 3 p.m. local time.
