New Technologies Spur Growth of World Special Machine Tool Markets

SAN JOSE, Calif.--June 25, 2001--The emergence of new special machine tools that cut, shape, polish and drill metal work pieces more precisely will boost demand from end-user industries.
Advances in software technology and automation will increase functionality of electrical discharge machine tools.
According to new analysis by Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), "World Special Machine Tool Markets," total market revenues reached $5.6 billion in 2000 and are projected to reach $9.4 billion by 2007.
"Despite the fact that these processes are better in quality and reliability for cutting, welding, drilling, polishing and forming applications, the high initial investment is a barrier for growth," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Rakesh Suri.
Many special machining processes are capital intensive compared to conventional metal removing processes. The high costs of electrochemical machining equipment have limited their use in automotive and aerospace applications, where cost-conscious companies prefer older technologies.
"Laser machine tools and electro discharge machine tools are not always the equipment of choice," says Suri. "Special tools manufacturers must strive to make these systems affordable and rugged to meet this challenge."
At the same time, environmental agencies will force manufacturers to make electrochemical and electric discharge machine tool processes friendly to the environment.
"Workforce demands, increasing environmental awareness, government regulations and evolving business practices are pushing the industry toward change," says Suri. Special tools manufacturers that effectively address environmental concerns will see their revenues rise.
Frost & Sullivan presents the 2001 Marketing Engineering Awards to companies that have worked diligently to make a positive contribution to the automotive filter industry. These market specific awards are presented to: Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing, Carl Zeiss, Extrude Hone, Flow International, George Fisher Group, Huen Werkzeugmaschinen & Industriebedorf GMBH, Rofin Sinar Laser, Trumpf GMBH and Wenzel Prazision GMBH.
