FLEMING TAKES PRO SPEC RACER ROUND FOUR AT SEARS POINT
SONOMA, Calif. (June 22, 2001)-Lee Fleming, of Lakeforest, Calif., took the
win while
dominating Round Four of the SCCA Pro Racing Pro Spec Racer series at Sears
Point Raceway.
John Black, of Tahoe City, Calif., and Jim Goughary Jr. of, Palm Beach
Gardens, Fla., completed
the top three.
Piloting the No. 2 Champion Motorsports Spec Racer, Fleming won for the
second time in
his career, in just eight professional appearances.
Starting from the second starting position, Fleming initially fell back
to third position on
lap one. But later that same lap, he caught and passed the top-two and held
on to lead every lap of
the race for a 0.857-second win over Black.
"Jim [Goughary Jr.] had the lead off the bat and I dropped back to
third," said Fleming.
"In turn 11 I got a great and I mean great run, and was able to overtake the
leaders. I thought I
was in some trouble nearing the end of the race when I was slowed by lapped
traffic. But John
[Black] raced me as clean as you can race a guy."
Black, in the No. 17 Ascent Racing Spec Racer, started the day third
and gave Fleming a
full rearview mirror for all 26 laps. Even though Black failed to get around
Fleming, he turned in
the fastest race lap, with a 1:27.400 (80.279 mph).
"I was hoping to finish well here since this is, what I consider to be,
my home track," said
Black. "I thought I was going to be able to get a run on him [Fleming] in
turn 10, but the car just
didn't respond with the power I needed. That was the only real opportunity I
had."
Jim Goughary Jr., No. 29 Ducksmart.com Spec Racer, recorded his
second-consecutive
top-three finish in a race he started from pole. The podium finish earned
him his 15th career
top-three finish.
"I think the fact that I have never raced a lap here hurt me on the
start," said Goughary Jr.
"I knew my time was numbered at the front. We're just happy to come out here
to California and
get a top-three."
Keith Scharf, of St. Louis, Mo., and Robert Breton, of Biddeford,
Maine, completed the
top-five. Goughary Jr. now has the Championship point standings lead, 56 to
54 over Warren
Stilwell.
The KML Greased Lightning Award of $300 went to No. 0 Chris Funk. Funk
started 35th
and made a exciting charge through the 38-car field to finish 21st.
