(June 22, 2001)-Jim Goughary Jr., of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., earned the pole in the final qualifying session for today's Round Four Pro Spec Racer race at Sears Point Raceway. Lee Fleming, of Lakeforest, Calif., and John Black, of Tahoe City, Calif., will start second and third, respectively. Goughary Jr., driving the No. 29 Ducksmart.com Spec Racer, paced the 43-car qualifying field with a fast lap of 1:27.720 (79.986 mph). Surprisingly, he took the pole in a field that included numerous drivers who consider Sears Point their home track. "I was looking for John [Black] to guide me around the track," said Goughary Jr. "I needed a rabbit to follow out there, and John knows this course pretty well. It's nice to be in front of all the local drivers here. Now I just need to calm down, get my head screwed back on, and get ready for the race." With his third career pole, Goughary Jr. moves into a tie for third place on the all-time Pro Spec Racer list for fastest qualifiers. "This is huge for me," said Goughary Jr. "I'm usually a terrible qualifier. Once I get in the race I'm fine, but just a terrible qualifier. I think the fact that I actually memorized a track map helped me out today. Its nice to be up front here with such a large field. That will play a big part in the race this afternoon." Goughary Jr. will once again look to overtake defending series champion, Warren Stilwell, in the points. Stilwell leads 49 to 42 over Goughary in the standings and will start today's race from the fifth position.
