Luverne Fire Apparatus Reports Record Sales Month in May
Spartan Motors Subsidiary Receives Nearly $4 Million in Orders,
Posts Best-Ever Month

BRANDON, South Dakota, June 18, 2001 - Luverne Fire Apparatus announced that
it received orders for $3.8 million in new fire trucks during May, making it
the best-ever month for orders in the Company's 90-year history.

The Brandon, South Dakota-based company, a subsidiary of Spartan Motors,
Inc. , said it received orders for 21 new fire trucks -
including 10 from the city of Chicago - during May. As they are completed
over the next eight months, the fire apparatus will be sent to fire
departments in Kansas, North Carolina, New York, Michigan, West Virginia and
Wisconsin, in addition to Illinois.

"We are pleased to report such a significant increase in orders, fueled in
large part by orders from large cities such as Chicago," said Jeff Lautt,
Luverne president. "We have been working aggressively to develop our dealer
base, and these efforts have begun to pay off in the form of new orders.
Luverne continues to gain market confidence as the reputation for the
quality and durability of our vehicles spreads."

The Chicago order is part of a three-year contract that calls for Luverne to
provide fire trucks to the city's fire department, with 22 orders placed to
date. It is the largest single contract Luverne has received to date.

Over the past 12 months, Luverne has seen a 40 percent increase in orders
for its custom and commercial fire pumpers, aerials and rescue apparatus.

"These results are very exciting, and reinforce the story of Spartan Motors
today as a Company focused exclusively on emergency vehicles and
recreational vehicles," said John Sztykiel, president and chief operating
officer of Spartan Motors. "Our Emergency Vehicle Team enjoyed a profitable
2000, and we look forward to growing both our top-line sales and our
bottom-line profitability in the quarters ahead."
