PRC-DeSoto Removable Camouflage Coating Succeeding for Military Aircraft, Vehicles

    PARIS--June 15, 2001--PRC-DeSoto International, a PPG Industries company based in Glendale, Calif., is having success with an environmentally friendly top coat for military aircraft and land vehicles that is easily applied and removed, making it well-suited for short-term application.
    According to Roald Johannsen, European aerospace marketing director, the Temporary Camouflage Coating provides operational service life of six months to as much as two years.
    "Rapid deployment of suitably camouflaged aircraft and vehicles is now possible with our easily applied and removed Temporary Camouflage Coating," Johannsen said. "The one-component coating is non-toxic and non-flammable, and can be applied after simple surface cleaning to most types of weapon systems, ground support equipment, vehicles and aircraft."
    Johannsen said the coating is removed with alkaline aqueous solutions using various application methods including brush, roller or spray.
    "Removal time depends on the size of the craft or vehicle, but averages about one hour for a battle tank or small helicopter. The craft or vehicle is then ready to return to normal service."
    More than 300 military vehicles and about 25 aircraft have been coated with PRC-DeSoto's Temporary Camouflage Coating since trials were initiated almost a decade ago.
