PPG All-Glass Cockpit Windows Specified for Fairchild Dornier 728JET, 928JET
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--June 15, 2001--PPG Industries' aerospace transparencies business, based in Huntsville, has been selected by Fairchild Dornier to design, manufacture and support the cockpit and passenger-cabin windows for its 728JET and derivative 928JET family of regional airliners.Fairchild Dornier chose PPG transparencies because PPG offered the highest level of product service and support, according to Thomas D. Lloyd, PPG senior account manager.
"Key issues were to have lightweight transparencies, superior service life and exceptional customer support," Lloyd said. "All-glass cockpit windows were specified for their unmatched durability, scratch resistance and service life. With PPG's Herculite II chemically strengthened glass, we are able to design lightweight, superior-performing glass windshields and windows.
"And we can provide Fairchild Dornier operators with the training and customer support that will allow them to maintain their cockpit windows in top condition."
The numbers one and two windshields will be three plies of Herculite II chemically tempered glass with the PPG 112 urethane interlayer and a polyvinyl butyral interlayer. The number three cockpit window will have two Herculite II glass plies and the PPG 112 interlayer.
The main windshields will have PPG's Nesatron deicing system, while the other cockpit windows will have the Nesatron defogging configuration.
All cockpit windows are designed and will be certified to withstand impact from a four-pound bird at 290 knots.
PPG will produce the windows at its Huntsville, Ala., aircraft transparencies facility. Deliveries are expected to begin late this year.
The passenger-cabin windows will be dual-glazed stretched acrylic units made at PPG's Ampaspace subsidiary at Casaletto Vaprio, Italy, near Milan.
PPG is the world's largest manufacturer of aircraft windshields, windows and canopies.
