Visionics Announces Installation of IBIS Mobile Identification System in Ontario, CA Squad Cars

    ONTARIO, Calif.--June 14, 2001--

Successful Pilot Funded by Federal Grant and Supported by Cong. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) and Gary Miller (R-CA)

Visionics Corporation , the worldwide leader in identification technologies and systems, announced today the successful installation of its IBIS mobile identification system in Ontario, California squad cars.
This follows the completion of end-to-end testing with full wireless communication capabilities to the Cogent's fully Automated Palm & Fingerprint Identification System (APFIS) at the Ontario Police Department (OPD).
The pilot program (called SQUID) and the subsequent testing was made possible by a federal grant obtained for the Redlands and Ontario Police Departments with support from California Congressmen Jerry Lewis (R) and Gary Miller (R). The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) and is administered by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Visionics Corporation and Cogent Systems, Inc., a leading automated identification technology provider based in South Pasadena, California, designed and implemented the integration at the OPD.
Notes Lloyd Scharf, Chief of Police of Ontario, "IBIS delivers ground-breaking capabilities to law enforcement. It is the only mobile identification system that captures fingerprints and photos and allows officers to identify subjects at remote locations and in real-time. This not only translates into reduced false arrests, faster response time and more efficient field operations, but also eliminates the inconvenience of transporting citizens to the police station for fingerprinting. We are enthusiastic about the impact it will have on our department and our community."
The IBIS system uses a hand-held portable device, called a Remote Data Terminal (RDT), which captures photographs, forensic-quality fingerprint images and magnetic stripe data. The data is then transmitted wirelessly to a laptop in the squad car and to the central IBIS server via the police radio communication system or cellular communications. At the IBIS server, the data is processed and transferred to one or more AFIS databases. If a fingerprint match exists, identification information is transferred back to the RDT. If there is no match, the fingerprint and photo files are discarded from the system.
"This is a major milestone in the development of the IBIS system and we are pleased to deliver on it as promised. It is an illustration of our leadership and innovation in the biometric industry. With AT&T, Cogent and Palomar Displays, we have combined cutting-edge technologies with our biometric capture and communications expertise. The Ontario Police Department has been instrumental in bringing these capabilities to the forefront," said Dr. Joseph J. Atick, president and chief executive officer of Visionics Corporation. "We can now look forward to delivering fully operational systems to law enforcement agencies throughout the country."
The City of Redlands, California and Hennepin County, Minnesota, continue to participate in the IBIS pilot.
