June 13, 2001Sixteen-year-old Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. is expected to be among top threats for victory in this Saturday night's USAC Regional "Special Event" Midget Car race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.
East, the son of famed car builder and former racer Bob East, is seeking his initial USAC feature victory in the program on the 1/4-mile banked pavement. In April he posted seventh fastest qualifying time in the 42-car field for the USAC WorldCom National Midget Car race at Anderson and was battling for the lead in the early laps before making wall contact and retiring from the event.
In May he continued to show promise in the Midget Cars, leading Kasey Kahne and Dave Darland, both driving Beast cars, in the WorldCom National Midget Car race at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After qualifying fourth fastest, he led for 18 laps before yielding to Kahne, then finished fourth in the 30-lapper.
East will face a bevy of talent in Saturday's race, which caps a full program of racing at Anderson. A 30-lap feature concludes the USAC activities. Other "top-10" drivers from the April Anderson race expected to compete at Anderson are Ryan Scott of Concord, N.C. and David Gough of Machesney Park, Ill.
