June 12, 2001USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series point leader Paul White and defending series champion Tracy Hines are among drivers who will seek new series records in this weekend's sixth round of the 2001 series at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.
A 100-mile race is scheduled at 11:30 am Sunday, following a morning warmup from 8-8:20 am. The race is scheduled for telecast on ESPN2 from 8-10 pm June 22.
Held in conjunction with the Radisson Indy 200 Indy Racing Northern Light Series event, this weekend's USAC activities at the 1-mile paved oval is expected to create opportunities for new series 1-lap and 100-mile race records. Hines set the series record for 100 miles in winning the 1999 race at PPIR at an average speed of 133.164 mph. Brad Noffsinger set the series 1-lap qualifying record of 143.093 mph at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis last year and Russ Gamester set the PPIR record of 140.972 mph in 1998.
Gamester, of Peru, Ind., trails White, of Temple, Tex., by just two points in the series standings going into this weekend's race. White won the "Copper World Classic" series opener at Phoenix, Ariz. in March and Gamester scored back-to-back series victories at Nazareth, Pa. and Indianapolis Raceway Park in May.
Practice is slated on Saturday from 8-8:50 and 11-11:50 am and qualifying is scheduled from 1:45-2:45 pm. A 15-mile "qualifying race" at 5:30 pm Saturday finalizes the 30-car field for Sunday's race.
