THE COLONEL'S BRAINERD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, BRAINERD, MINN.
SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2001
SHIELDS BUMPS BOWLER, PAYNE STAYS ON TOP
BRAINERD, Minn. - Duane Shields used his final qualifying pass to
vault him to the top of the Federal-Mogul Dragster class and knock off the
West Central Division Champion Bruce Bowler. The Las Vegas resident
recorded a 5.526 second pass at 258.73 mph to take the number one
qualifying position and pushing Bowler to the number two spot with a pass
of 5.573 at 256.09 mph.
"It's a beautiful day for racing," voiced Shields. "The track's
real nice, it always is here at Brainerd. It got a little warmer than we
normally like it, but the car ran great and we should be in good shape for
tomorrow's eliminations."
Jay Payne held off a charging Cy Chesterman for the top spot in
Federal-Mogul Funny Car for this weekend's Colonel's Truck Accessories
Challenge. Payne drove his Valvoline Camaro to a 5.802 second lap at 241.79
mph. Chesterman, of Souix City, Iowa, clocked in at 5.864, 238.93 for the
number two position and is followed by Kirk Williams with a run of 5.915 at
245.83 mph.
"We're running real well right now," said Payne. "We came to
Brainerd on the way home from last week's national event in Chicago
figuring it would give us a good chance to test our combination for the
nationals here at the end of August. With the way the cars running, I'm
glad we came. Maybe we can come away from here with a win."
Payne will square off with local racer Gage Chaffee of Big Lake,
Minn. in round one of eliminations. Chaffee grabbed the final qualifying
position with a best pass of 6.423 seconds at 215.57 mph.
Gates open at 7 a.m. on Sunday with eliminations scheduled to begin at 9
