LTV Steel Indiana Harbor Works Receives ISO 14001

EAST CHICAGO, Ind., June 7 LTV Steel's Indiana Harbor
Works has been recommended for ISO 14001 certification and is expected to be
the first integrated domestic steel facility to receive the certification -- a
recognition that the plant's environmental management system meets the
stringent international standard established by the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva Switzerland.

The impending certification culminated a two-year team effort to implement
the new environmental management system at Indiana Harbor Works, which
involved virtually all of the plant's 2,700 employees.

"The men and women of Indiana Harbor Works rightfully deserve the
distinction of being the first in the domestic integrated steel industry to
earn this prestigious recognition," said John C. Mang, III, Senior Vice
President-Steel Operations, LTV Steel. "Their hard work and dedication to
sound environmental performance, together with the hundreds of millions of
dollars in capital investments made by the company over the years, has made
Indiana Harbor Works one of the true industry leaders in productivity,
efficiency and environmental excellence."

Richard J. Morris, General Manager-Indiana Harbor Works and Hennepin,
commended the ISO 14001 implementation team, comprised of both management and
hourly employees and representing every plant department.

"Our ISO 14001 implementation team did an excellent job of planning,
training, communicating and completing all the necessary steps in preparation
for the intensive two-stage audits, which began back in January 2000," said
Morris. "Each Indiana Harbor Works employee should take great pride in these
outstanding results and for their commitment to continually protect and
improve environmental quality."

To meet the ISO 14001 standard, Indiana Harbor Works implemented and
documented its environmental management systems throughout the East Chicago
facility. Two comprehensive audits were completed in April and May by SRI
Quality System Registrars, Inc., a firm accredited to assess and certify
compliance with the standard. Indiana Harbor was recommended for
certification following the "Stage 2" audit on May 18.

"Indiana Harbor Works employees have established and practice a very
strong, solid environmental program," said Rose Koronkiewicz, auditor-SRI
Quality System Registrars, Inc. "They have established practices that go
above and even beyond compliance. It is evident that careful structure and
extensive planning went into establishing such an incredibly stable system."

SRI will conduct follow-up surveillance audits to assure that Indiana
Harbor Works continues to comply with the international standards.

"By achieving this recognition, Indiana Harbor Works employees have set
the bar very high indeed for other steel facilities to benchmark this
excellent performance," added Morris.
