Wavecom Strengthens Its Position in the Automotive Sector; Wavecom Equips Mannesmann VDO's Telematics Systems
ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France--June 5, 2001--Wavecom SA , a leading developer of digital wireless standard modules (WISMO(TM)), and Mannesmann VDO, one of the world's foremost automotive equipment suppliers, have developed a hands-free GSM voice/data system to equip new Opel cars.Under a February 2000 cooperation agreement, Wavecom and Mannesmann VDO have joined forces to provide motorists with access to a wide range of services encompassing communication, navigation, safety, security and maintenance.
Relying on the voice/data communication capacities of the WISMO2C module built into the CarPhone telematic system, Opel drivers can access a wealth of information and services to enhance the on-road experience. CarPhone comes as an option on all new Opel models.
The services are provided by OnStar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Corp. OnStar uses GPS satellite technology and wireless communications to set up a permanent link between the driver, the vehicle and an OnStar center, staffed by advisers who provide personal assistance in real time. OnStar's services include stolen vehicle tracking, emergency services, remote door unlocking, vehicle location and roadside assistance, remote diagnostics, route support, airbag deployment notification, and online reservation and purchasing services.
Says Harald Moeglich, head of Opel operations at Mannesmann VDO's Automobile Communication division: "The WISMO offers a completely integrated, ready-to-use solution in a rugged and very compact package. With its dual-band capability, which allows it to cover a maximum range of GSM networks, we find it particularly well suited to our needs."
"GSM and GPRS technologies offer tremendous opportunities to the automotive industry," comments Aram Hekimian, Chief Executive Officer of Wavecom. "The advantages of our unique WISMO technology make it a highly attractive solution for automotive equipment suppliers."
